Growing up, I played a lot of AAU travel baseball. I couldn’t tell you how many times my coach – who just so happened to be my dad – told us, “If you win every inning, you cannot possibly lose the game.”
The same applies to basketball. If you win every quarter, you will win the basketball game. Unfortunately, though, winning three of four quarters just did not cut it for the Cavaliers on Friday night.
A miserable performance in the second quarter allowed the Hornets to take a 19 point advantage heading in to the break. The Cavs endured a four minutes scoring drought late in the quarter during which the Hornets went on a 15-0 run to go up 59-41.
Like a typical Cleveland sports franchise, the Cavaliers did not give up. Behind another steady performance from the Cavs’ bench, they clawed back in the third quarter and cut the lead to 13. Cleveland fought hard in the fourth quarter and cut the game to three, a one possession contest. David West and the Hornets were just too much and the Cavaliers fell to 5-6 on the season.
The Cavalier reserves combined to score 65 points, dish out 11 assists and snag 28 rebounds. Antawn Jamison came up big (again), netting 20 points including three 3-point attempts. Ramon Sessions added a steady 16 point effort and played a rather impressive game on both sides of the floor. He came up big in another game in which Mo Williams was a non-factor.
Daniel Gibson played another impressive game. His numbers (3-10 FG, 10 pts, 3 rbs, 3 asts) weren’t particularly impressive but he did a lot of good things that don’t show up on the stat sheet. He, like Anderson Varejao, brings a lot of energy and a lot of hustle to the floor every single night. He is only getting better. And, while we’re talking about Boobie, I’d like to personally show my support for the Cleveland campaign that is urging all All-Star voters to put Daniel Gibson down as a write-in vote.
Fortunately, the Cavaliers will have another chance to string four quarters together in San Antonio on Saturday night. Keep the faith, BELIEVELAND!
